1968 International Harvester Scout

Work Wheels

For everyone with lots to do... and who likes some fun when done.

Name your chore and let the champ take over. For here is the most versatile and practical set of wheels going for answering a call, delivering an order, hauling a load, checking a fence, chasing a steer, or for simply getting you to a job site and back.

Folks are often flabbergasted at the many other things the International Scout can do. Things like operating a winch, snow plow, rotary sweeper, post hole auger, mower and lost of other attachments.

All this takes power. And Scout models have the right power for your purpose in a choice of three engines—two peppy fours or a high-spirited V-8. Moreover, they can be equipped with a three-speed or four-speed transmission, two-wheel drive, limited-slip differntial, and even right hand steering. The largest selection of performance options of any vehicle of its kind. Small wonder more work is done with Scout wheels than any other compact in the field.

Adventure Wheels

For everyone who wants to break old habits and blaze new trails.

Shed the conventional and come alive with the all-wheel drive. In the Scout you can drive to where other have to walk. You can wheel down to the seashore or whip up into the mountains with equal ease. No road is too remote, no campsite, fishing hole or scenic spot too inaccessible with Scout traction at your command.

And with new V-8 power, you have pull-ability aplenty to tote boat and camper trailers through virtually any terrain.

Your new-found freedom can be expanded with extra equipment to broaden Scout cersatility and utility. Auxiliary gas tanks, increased-capacity cooling for 4-cylinder engines, heavy-duty electrical system, heavy-duty springs, axles, clutches, larger-size tires and rims—all are available on every model.

You also have an open season on interior conveniences and appointments. Prefer bucket seats and padded doors? Just say the word. The same goes for Deluxe all-vinyl upholstery, 8-track stereo tape player, pushbutton radio, fresh air heater-defroster, cigar lighter, and so forth.

Powerful Wheels

Three engines that give you more than just "horses" under the hood.

Scout power is a far cry from the conventional. The international-built engines used in every Scout incorporate the stuff and stamina of their big brothers that power tough International trucks. Power ratings are in keeping with Scout size, use and tradition of economy. You get true, usable, high-torque horsepower geared to reach the wheels at most economical engine speeds. matched with either the standard three-speed or optional four-speed transmission, you have the most productive and reliable pwoer team going.

Top-Powered Valve-In-Head V-8
At right is the International high-torque V-8 available in all Scout body styles with all-wheel drive. This 155 hp, 266 cubic inch unit is equipped for real action with a large-capacity full-flow oil filter, oil bath air cleaner, a high-capacity cooling system for extra-strenuous driving conditions and a low-speed cut-in alternator to reduce battery drain.

1968 International Harvester Scout chassis

Built for Action from the bottom up

Scout durability is built deep. It starts with a heavily reinforced welded steel box frame on a 100-inch wheelbase. Coupled with a firm multi-leaf front suspension system, it lets you enjoy an extraordinary sure-footed ride. Scout suspension keeps the nose up and out of trouble in rough terrain. It prevents a squishy, bucking sensation when traveling over ruts and hard roads. As a result, you constantly retain the feel of the vehicle and the road. Breakes have heavy-duty bonded linings.

A husky 3,500 pound capacity rear axle adds to overall strength. It absorbs stress and increases load-carrying ability. The chassis is topped off with a tight, welded body — carefully constructed and insulated against noise and vibration, and finished for excellent protection against weather and corrosion.

All told, the International Scout is built the way all off-the-road action vehicles should be — strong, stable and tight, with components that exceed conventional standards.

1968 International Harvester Scout interior view

Designed for Safety from the top down

Every Scout model comes factory equipped with this complete safety package for greater security from driver's compartment to chassis:

Additional Standard Safeguards
Every Scout is also equipped with extra protection against rough terrain travel. Nothing hangs below the frame. The gas tank is fully enclosed and mounted outside the driver's compartment, above the frame. The radiator is protected in the front by a steel frame cross member, and underneath by a heavy steel flange.

Action Wheels equipped any way you want

The Internaitonal Scout gives you as standard equipment features that are either optional or not available on other vehicles of its type. In fact, the Scout doesn't skimp anywhere along the line.

Take its instrumentation. It's complete — a fully-instrumented padded sah including oil pressure and ammeter gauges. The windsheild is permanent, with bottom-mounted wipers to give you a full sweep and to keep water from splashing back and forth. Defroster vents run clear across, not just on the sides. The front passenger bucket seat tilts out of the way so other passengers can step, instead of climb, into the rear. And there's no gas tank to trip over. It's outside so there are no fumes or danger from spillage inside. All seats are thickly foam padded. Doors and roof are sound deadened. And the golve compartment is wide enough for a long flashlight and other sizeable items.

Interior and Trim Selections

The Scout can be tailored to your preference in appearance as well as performance. Each body style is available with standard Utility or optional Custom interior and trim.

Standard Equipment
Offers all basic comfort and convenience features: full-width foam padded seat in durable vinyl, insulated rubber floor mat, ash tray, silver-gray front bumper, plus the complete safety package.

The New Scout II...

Weekday/Weekend Wagon!

It's the start of a new way of life. The most exciting blend of beauty and adventure ever to hit the road—Scout II.

Cruise along with the crowd. Then pull off the pavement for parts unknown whenever you feel the urge. For years, the International Scout has enjoyed the reputation as the "go-anywhere" vehicle. And now the all-new generation Scout II brings you stronger construction, more room, a wider choice of engines andmany other innovations to give you an even better getaway-from-it-all machinethan ever before. Acombination of features you can't find in any other American or foregin compact. Prove it to yourself with an exciting demonstration drive. It might be the start of a new way of life.

Styling

Your first glimpse of Scout II gives you a strong hint of what's to come. Completely restyled from front to rear, Scout II looks twice as sporty, coming or going. Or standing still.

Choose from seven exterior body colors, and four color-coordinated interior colors. Sit in the driver's seat. You'll notice the sweeping new dashboard that combines beauty and boldness with some sensible ideas (gauges instead of idiot lights and patded instrument panel).

Look for other fine touches, like winshield washers, roomy glove compartment, patded sun visors, adjustable window vents, and arm rests. And if you want even more glamour, order the deluxe exterior trim (shown) and deluxe or custom interior trim packages that atd distinctive extras.

Drive up to the country club in the morning for golf. Spend the afternoon cavorting across the boondocks. Then return in the evening for the big dance. Scout II belongs wherever you go. It's the most versatile "wagon" you can get. but watchout—you might find your Scout has become your "favorite car."

Comfort

Every square inch of new Scout II has been space-engineered and put to work for you. The full-witdh rear seat gives passengers lots of room to spread out. And the luggage space in back will accommodate enough suitcases for a cross-country trip.

If you want atditional cargo area, you can fold down the rear seat. Presto—extra needed footage. Upfront more foor room—good news for long legs and long trips.. And more relaxation in thick foam-patded seats.

Your ride in the International Scout II is quieter too, thanks to improved engine mountings and extra insulation. You can have air conditioning to give you year-round comfort, and tinted glass all around.

Get the space you need in a fun machine. Step into the new Scout II. Settle back in solid comfort, no matter where you point your wheels.

Convenience

You'll be impressed with Scout convenience the minute you open the door. The enterances are wider... doors open farther... let you enter and exit more easily. If you're getting in the wide rear seat, the backs of the front seats fold down for easy access. And you don't have to step over the door frame to get in Scout II. It's level with the floor—another major structural improvement!

Other conveniences you can get in your Scout II are power brakes and power steering. You'll also like the optional roof luggage rack, which atds beauty as well as utility. A few of the little convenience extras included in the deluxe interior trim package for the Traveltop model are cigarette lighter, rear dome light, courtesy lamp and coat hook, as well as color-keyed interior, spare tire cover, undercoating, and parking brake warning light.

If you want to combine convenience with adventure, jump in a luxurious Scout II and head for the hills.

Performance

Performance is the payoff in the new Scout II. It leaves all the other compacts behind in total capability.

Take the cab top model shown. Slip behind the wheel and see for yourself why you don't have to go to an import to get a compact pickup that's styled right, built right, powered right—and price right! You get American performance. A choice of four engines—from the spunky 111 hp, four-cyliinder Cpmanche up to a new 345 cubic inch, 197 hp V-8 that can even pull a 3,000 pound trailer load. You can have a three or four-speed manual transmission or an automatic three-speed. Plus four-wheel drive that lets you make your own road.

You get leaf springs at all four wheels. A drive train built to take tough loads and cross country jostling. High clearance combined with low center of gravity. Short front and rear overhang for greater maneuverability. Small wonder the Scout is the choice of so many commerical people, such as contractors, service station operators, ranchers and nursery men, as well as individualists who want to satisfy their wanderlust and roam at will.

The Scout II pickup also offers you a number of extra pulses, like a choice of two or four-wheel drive, limited slip differential, integral utility step bumper and trailer hitch, transfer case power take-off, skid plate, increased-capacity electrical system, bench or bucket seats and direct-reading, full-instrumented dash. All in atdition to traditional International quality and truck-tough construction.
